Book #01:Chapter 1
Angelica's Pov
To say I was nervous would be an under statement. I was fisting and unfisting my hands trying to calm my nerves as I was sat in a car looking outside the window. This is the first time in almost 5 years that I've left my home.
The only thing that has kept me sane and connected to the outside world was my laptop and my best friend Oliver.
Oliver was also my neighbor and he came to our house quite often with his parents who are real angels. He and his family knew that my parents are strict but they never knew the horror I face in the place I call home.
The laptop was given to me so I could complete my Junior High School online and won't have to leave the house.
I was always thankful that they haven't taken it back from me and let me keep it under strick rules that I knew better than to break.
Which is why I never added Oliver online. I only talked to him in person and now that I maybe could I didn't get a chance to ask for his contact because of how fast everything happened.
Since yesterday everything has changed in my life. My mother and stepfather got into an accident killing my mom and sending my stepfather to the hospital in a very critical situation.
Like everyday I was at home cooking dinner when police knocked on the front door. They told me about the accident and took me to the station.
As soon as I heard the news my first question was that what will happen to me? Where will I go?
The officers were really friendly and tried their best to make me relax but I couldn't. My anxiety was killing me.
I've heard online about the horrors of orphanages and foster homes. I couldn't leave one hell just to step into another.
After hours of sitting at the station and panicking thinking about everything that could go wrong, my social worker came in.
She told me that my brothers have agreed to take me in. I was shocked. I had gone through every possible scenario in my head but never did I even think about this.
Don't get me wrong it's not like I didn't know about them, I always did. But I had lost all hope to ever meet them again.
When dad and mom divorced I was only 5 years old. Mom took my custody while dad took my brothers. After the divorce I started living with mom at the other side of the city almost a hour away from them.
Dad only came to visit me once which was a month after the divorce and gave me a teddy bear which I named bebby. I still have it, maybe because it was the last gift that I received with no bad intentions.
When he came that night he was drunk and got into an argument with mom constantly blaming her for cheating on him. The last thing he said before leaving the house shaped my whole childhood.
"Fine then! The boys are mine and Angelica is yours now. You don't go near my children and I won't go near yours"
I didn't think that he was serious. I always believed he would come back for me. It was the first time I had seen him drunk I thought he was sick and didn't know what he was saying.
But I was too naive. I never saw him after that but he kept sending money for me that my mother happily accepted.
After he died my oldest brother Lorenzo sent a letter to mom saying that he will continue to send the child support because it was dad's wish.
As much as I remember my dad loved me, he gave me everything that I ever wanted and took really good care of me.
I don't remember alot about my brothers but as much as I can I think they loved me too. They would always play with me and give me piggyback rides.
I'm not scared to go and live with them I know they won't harm me they're my brothers. But everything that had happened to me I know that the ones you trust can be the worst.
"Miss Romano we are here" The driver informed me and I got out of the car and looked the mansion in front of me.
I was now at 'Romano Estate' which will be my new home. It feels so unreal to come back here after 11 years. I hope now I get the life I always deserved.
"Don't worry this will be placed in your room" The driver told me when I came to take my stuff that he was getting it out of the trunk.
"Ok. Thank you" I told him unsure and turned around moving towards the front door of the mansion.
"Miss Romano. It's nice to meet you. I'm Mary the head maid" A women in her late 30s greeted me.
"Hi" I said and waited for her to say something.
"Your brother Lorenzo told me to bring you to his office when you arrive'' She told me as she opened the door for me to step inside.
I was surprised to see that not much has changed in all those years. It is alot like I remember it. There were stairs directly in front of the doors leading up to the other floors.
The living room was on the left side and the dining room was located at the right side. Through the dining room there was the kitchen which also connected to the backyard.
I wanted to see the rest of the mansion but first I had to go see Lorenzo. I was nervous to meet him after so many years but I tried to think positive and wish that everything goes well.
Book #01:Chapter2
Mary took me upstairs and I remember that the bedrooms were on second floor but she didn't stop there and took to the third floor where the offices of my brothers were located.
She stopped in front of the door that had 'Capo' written on it, which I know means 'Boss' because I grew up with mom always speaking Italian to me.
I know Lorenzo took over dad's business after he died so it only makes sense that he also took his home office as well. I know this because I've read every article about my family.
I know what each of them look like and how luxurious their lives are. I've also read about the tragic accident in which they lost their sister even though I'm very much alive.
When I read the rumors about them being in the Mafia I asked mom about it and thankfully she was in a good mood that day probably because of how high she was.
So she happily told me everything that they are not just in the Italian Mafia, they are the Italian Mafia. She told me how ruthless and cruel they can be to the people who get on their bad side.
I am pretty positive that they won't hurt me but I still won't defy any of their orders. I can't trust them not just because they are in the Mafia but also because I shouldn't trust strangers.
Mary told me that she won't be coming inside and left for downstairs. I mustered up all my courage and knocked firmly on the door twice.
When I heard a 'come in' I opened the door and their sat Lorenzo Romano in all his glory. I entered inside and closed the door behind me. I took a few step forward and stopped almost two feet away from his desk.
"Good evening" I greeted him trying not to be intimidated by his presence and kept looking at him.
I saw him looking me straight in my eyes as if trying to find something in them. His gaze followed my every move since I opened the door.
He looked down at my outfit for almost 5 seconds and then back up at my eyes. He raised a brow at me and his eyes now held disapproval which I'm guessing was for my outfit.
I was wearing a blue baggy t-shirt and simple black shorts with white joggers and black socks. I know I look good but if he doesn't like it what can I do?
"Evening. Sit down" He said and motioned to the seat in front of him.
I sat down and diverted my gaze to his table not wanting to look at my unwelcoming brother anymore.
"Welcome back Angelica. I hope someone must've told you that you will be living with us now" He said in a very formal tone that made me feel like I'm in a business meeting. I wish he had called me 'Angel' like he used to.
"Yes I know" I said in a low voice.
"Good. I have a meeting so I would like to quickly go through the rules with you. Rules that you will have to follow now that you are here." He started and waited for me to say something but I didn't.
I wasn't new to the idea of rules. I've always lived following them. Although I had initially thought that I'll have more freedom here I still don't mind as long as I am safe here.
"It would be appreciated if you look at me or atleast say something to indicate that your listening'' He said harshly as if I irritated him.
"Sorry, I am listening" I whispered not taking my eyes off of the table in front of me.
"Rules are simple. You will not go out until you have permission from me as I am your legal guardian now.
You are not allowed to drink, smoke or do any sort of drugs.
You can go anywhere in the mansion premises but you are not allowed to invade our personal space. Meaning you will not enter our offices or bedrooms." He said and awkward silence again invade the room.
"You have to speak to let me know that you understand Angelica" He said fully annoyed now.
"Yes I understand" I quickly said not wanting to annoy him any more.
"Now. I saw you completed your junior high online. Would you like to go to a regular high school or an online one?"
"Regular high school" I said immediately. Although I know it will be so difficult with my social awkwardness and anxiety but I won't let any chance slip of me seeing the real world.
"Very well. After summer vacations which will take another 2 months to end, you will start your high school" He informed me.
I noticed he only speaks with authority, not leaving any room for arguments. Even if I wanted to I would never go against his orders, he is the Mafia boss after all.
"Ok" I said not repeating my mistake of not responding.
"If you need anything you can ask any of the maids and it will be given to you. Come to me only if it is something important." He said and I mumbled another 'ok' in response.
"You may go now. You room is the last one on the second floor" He said in a dismissing tone and started going through some file on his desk. I immediately got up but he spoke again.
"Just don't get in our way Angelica and everything will be fine" He said in a warning tone looking dead serious and I understood that this is the most important rule of them all.
"Right" I said and quickly turned around exiting his office.
Book #01:Chapter3
This was it. It was our first meeting after 11 years but he didn't even bother to ask how I am. He didn't hug me or tell me he missed me. My mother just died yesterday he could've atleast given me some fake condolences.
I think none of my brothers want me here just like Lorenzo otherwise they would've come to welcome me. Maybe they are just busy and will come to meet me later.
As soon as I was in the hallway I released a breath I didn't know I was holding and made my way downstairs to the second floor.
Thankfully I located my room without any problem because it was the same room I lived in when I was here years ago.
The room had changed alot it which I'm actually grateful for because I don't think I would've liked seeing princesses on my wall.
As the driver had told me all my stuff was placed in the room. There were three suitcases filled with clothes and shoes, one school bag that had toiletries and stuff that I couldn't put in my suitcase.
There was also my guitar and a stage piano. Both of which were almost as old as me but I've kept them in a pretty decent state so they work just as fine.
I was too tired as I couldn't get a good sleep at the police station last night so I decided to only unpack what I need right now which was only my pajamas.
I took a quick shower and changed into my pajamas. It was now 4 pm and I guessed that none of my brothers are interested in coming to meet me so I better get some sleep before dinner.
I was fully passed out when I heard a knock on my door. I got up and opened the door to see Mary standing their with a tray of food in hand.
"I brought your dinner Miss Romano" She said politely smiling at me.
"Why did you bring it here? Is no one else having dinner?" I asked a little surprised because I had expected to be called downstairs for dinner and eat together like a family just like we used to.
"They are. Downstairs. But Mr Lorenzo told me to bring yours here everyday" She replied giving me a sad smile.
So now I completely understand what Lorenzo meant by 'stay out of our way'. They don't even want me to sit with them for dinner.
I'm glad she told me this and saved me from embarrassing myself. Because if she hadn't I would've definitely wanted to meet them for breakfast tomorrow.
It's ok if they don't want me here but they can show some basic manners. This is not even how you treat your guest let alone family. They should atleast come and introduce themselves.
But I won't complain, for the first time in years I'm eating something I didn't have to make myself. As long as they provide me with food and a roof above my head I'll be happy.
